The editor at CBS Sunday Morning asked if I had any photos of my son Mike back at the period when I first had the idea for The Graveyard Book - late 1985. I looked. We really didn't have any. I wandered next door and asked Mary (his mum, my former wife and for these last five years my friend and next-door neighbour) if she had any photos from back then. "No," she said. Then, "Do you mean those transparencies? I have them in an envelope somewhere." She vanished and came back with a large manila envelope from a long time ago. "Here."

Half a lifetime ago -- literally -- I was nearly 25, and working for magazines. Henry Fikret, who photographed a lot of the interviews I did, volunteered to take some photos of me and my family, and he did.A week later the envelope arrived, and I realised that everything he shot was on colour transparencies -- like huge slides -- and I was never sure what do with them, other than being fairly sure I couldn't take them down to Boots the Chemist and have prints knocked out. So they stayed in their envelope, and they kept their secrets, and were forgotten.

Yesterday I had the transparencies scanned, and finally got to see lots of pictures I had never actually seen before of Holly as a baby, Mike at the time that I would have watched him riding his tricycle around the graveyard, and me... at exactly half my age: A young journalist who had sold a very small handful of short stories and two non-fiction books, with dreams of writing fiction and comics. At the time I was dressing in grey, but was getting tired of the way that you would buy something grey and take it home and discover that it was a blueish grey or a brownish grey, and wondering if I'd have the same problem if I just started to dress in black.

And half a lifetime on, it seemed like it might be good to put one up here. I checked, and Mary didn't mind. What odd clothes we wore back then. What big glasses. And look, my hair is practically normal.

So long ago, and it went like the blink of an eye.

...

Birthday wishes are flooding in from around the globe. I wish I could reply to everyone personally, but it would take the next 365 days... so thank you. Thank you all.

And a particular thank you to Garrison Keillor, who announced my birthday on NPR and who also told me that on my thirteenth birthday they burned Slaughterhouse 5, and that on my ninth birthday Sesame Street was born. The Writers Almanac is a marvellous thing.

...

In January I will be part of a free concert for all ages on January 16, 2010, at 7pm, in the World Financial Center Winter Garden, New York. I'll be the narrator for the performance of Peter and the Wolf, performed by the http://www.knickerbocker-orchestra.org (whose website you should visit to get details).

Kissing is about spreading germs (and this is a good thing), a scientist says.

Alan Moore is leaping aboard the Underground magazine bandwagon. Following the success of IT and OZ, Alan's Dodgem Logic is coming out. There's a great interview with Alan at http://www.mustardweb.org/dodgemlogic/

(And enormous congratulations to Alan, who is now a grandfather, and to Leah and John, who are now parents, and Edward Alec Moore-Reppion, who is now, um, born. A Scorpio, like his grandfather and his whatever-exactly-I am, sort of honorary great-uncle or something. Not that we Scorpios believe in that sort of thing, of course.)

Again, thank you all for the birthday wishes...

Ahahaha hi guys.

I'm sorry for being so absent for these last few weeks; my CFUD playing mojo died sometime when school started and it's taken me a while to get it back. So this is kind of like the end of an unannounced hiatus derp.

I'm also sorry to say I'll be dropping Trish and Rika; so many apologies to my awesome castmates for being an inactive one. They definitely deserve to be reapped because both casts are amazing. I'll still be around with Laon and Cooro, who will hopefully be back into the swing of things really soon.

... That is uh it. Unless you would like to spam this post with something like kittens. I am accepting of kittens.

Dear Democratic Party,

Hi! Remember me? I'm that young semi-marginalized person that's been voting for you for a few years now.

Sadly, I don't think I'm going to be doing so again for a while. It's nothing personal, really - except, wait, IT TOTALLY IS.

That thing where you're voting to take away my bodily autonomy? That thing where you're allowing my right to get married to the person I choose go up for vote by mob mentality? That thing where you don't seem to give a flying fuck whether you actually reform our health care?

Well, the personal is political, as they say. And it doesn't get much more personal than what I decide to do with my uterus, who I want to spend my life with, and whether I can survive from day to day.

It doesn't even matter if it's just me or not. The fact that you're deciding this for every other woman, queer person, and person who can't afford basic health care in this country, though? The fact that you're doing all of this when you claim to be the party that won't?

Color me disillusioned. Color me abandoned. Color me sick-at-heart. Color me something - anything - other than blue. Because I'm tired of this.

Next election, if I vote, I'll be voting for someone whose views actually align with my own, regardless of party affiliation. And if they lose? Well, at least I'll have gone down standing for my principles - which is something more than you can say.

Either way, I'm outta here.

----

On that note, anyone interested in moving to Canada with me? Alternately, for those already in Canada, would you mind if I were to drop in occasionally and/or set up an anime club or something? Because I could, potentially, do this on my own. I would still like an eensy bit more of a support network than that, though.

I am just genuinely curious what is the favorite pairing on my FL (I know what some of you will vote for but vote anyways). :)

Poll #1483504 FMA Pairing Poll
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 17

What is Your Favorite Pairing Out of These Four

View Answers

Ed/Winry
3 (17.6%)

Roy/Riza
10 (58.8%)

Al/Mei
3 (17.6%)

Ling/Ran Fan
1 (5.9%)

I genuinely like all these pairings but I always had a soft spot for Al/Mei (probably because it's not as popular as some of the others). And by my definition all these pairings are canon or have canon undertones if you like.

I guess I am in an FMA mood today. Probably because of how wonderfully awesome chapter 101 was/is. XD

How in the hell did I miss this?!

"A man impersonating the Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Sanders managed to dupe his way into the UN headquarters in New York and shake hands with a senior official.

Dressed in the fast food icon's familiar white suit and black bow tie, the actor evaded tight security to gain access to the restricted areas of the complex.

He even posed for a photograph with Ali Treki, the new president of the UN General Assembly, before the alarm was raised and he was ejected.

A spokeswoman for Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, yesterday said that an investigation had been launched into the security breach, which was dreamed up by KFC as a promotional stunt.

[...]

As part of its campaign to promote a new menu range, KFC is "lobbying" the UN for the fictional Grilled Nation to be accepted as a member state." - Source

I. What! What the hell! How could you?!

Whoever gave me their insomnia can take it back now. Again I went to bed at a decent hour (before 11 p.m.) and again I spent most of the night not sleeping. When my alarm went off at 6 a.m. I turned it off and tried to go back to sleep...with mixed results. I'm missing my first class right now, in fact. I was just too tired...and I still am, technically, but I have a lab and my binder due in Textiles at 10:15 a.m. so I need to attend that class at least. This perpetual headache is also getting annoying! I wish I knew what was causing the trouble with sleep and the headaches. I have to wonder if the weather constantly fluctuating from the upper 50s to the lower 30s is to be blamed. Idaho's weather is just too erratic for me!

The insomnia wasn't a total waste, in any case. When my head wasn't pounding so much I schemed out actually making my final Flash project an introduction to D&D, complete with drawings of my characters. Since I don't draw people well I decided I ought to try for a very cute and simplistic approach:

Photobucket
This is just a test, obviously. I quickly sketched it out on Photoshop, then drew a cleaner version. I'm really going to go for super simplistic for the animals as well. The best part is that I have a wide range of characters here with me, so coming up with depictions of D&D races and classes will be easy! I'll just need to get serious about starting this soon. They'll all be colored as well so they'll stand out in the Flash site.

Time to get serious about breakfast so I can get out the door on time. Somebody want to take this headache away from me while they're at it?
